71 Dead in Israeli Airstrike on Iran's Evin Prison Amid Escalating Conflict
At least 71 people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike on Tehran’s Evin Prison, according to Iran’s judiciary, marking one of the deadliest incidents during the recent Iran-Israel conflict. The airstrike, reportedly conducted on June 23, targeted the high-security facility during the final phase of aerial engagements between the two countries.
On Sunday, judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir confirmed the fatalities, which included prison staff, young military personnel, inmates, visiting family members, and residents living near the prison. The incident was reported by Al Jazeera.
The strike came amid rising hostilities that began when Israel launched a surprise attack on Iran on June 13, citing efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The conflict escalated dramatically after the United States launched missile strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, prompting Iran to retaliate.
In the 12 days of intense aerial warfare, both Iran and Israel targeted each other’s military and sensitive infrastructure. Eventually, a ceasefire was brokered by the United States. However, during the active phase of the conflict, Israel expanded its operations to hit symbolic institutions of Iran’s government, including the infamous Evin Prison.
Jahangir had previously reported substantial damage to the prison’s administrative building and many casualties. He later confirmed that surviving inmates were transferred to other detention facilities across Tehran Province.
Evin Prison is known for housing political prisoners, dual nationals, and Western detainees, many of whom are often used by Iran in prisoner exchange negotiations. At the time of the strike, the prison was reportedly holding several foreign nationals, including two French citizens detained for over three years.
The attack has drawn international condemnation and raised concerns over the targeting of civilian and non-combatant facilities during wartime.
